The Black Star
Meaning
The black star in Ghana's flag symbolizes the country's emancipation from colonial rule and its leading role in Africa's struggle for independence. It was inspired by Marcus Garvey's Black Star Line, which was a symbol of pride, unity, and the potential for African self-reliance. The black star represents hope and the pioneering spirit of the Ghanaian people as the first sub-Saharan African nation to gain independence in 1957.
